So glad it's Friday finally...

January Question a Day Memage

19. What colour scheme is your bedroom?

I don't know - shades of blue, with some red in there? (The bed spread, throw pillows - blue, coverlet, white, rug - it's a turkish red and blue rug, photo on wall of niece and big fluffy white (streaked with red) cats.

20. Have you read any of the Winnie the Pooh books?

Yes. To say I was an avid reader as a child would be a gross understatement. I couldn't read until the second-third grade, but once I figured out how? I read whatever I could find. I also had them read to me at one stage. I've read most of the children's classics. Plus the Winnie the Pooh books had pictures and illustrations.

21. Do you like wearing colourful socks? What do the brightest socks you own look like?

I tend to only wear them at home - and they usually are fluffy stay at home socks. The brightest ones had a raccoon on them - but I lost them, now they are the purple fluffy ones. I also have a pair of fluffy socks with penguins on them. My difficulty with socks is I lose them doing laundry.

22. In January 1496, Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tested a flying machine. Do you like flying?

Not really? I mean it's okay. I don't mind being in the plane. But I'm six foot, and planes are built for midgets. Also, I hate the logistics of flying? Which has only gotten worse over the years? Too many odds and bits to worry about. Personally, I prefer trains - easier to get on and off, not as many things to worry about, more comfortable seats, bigger windows, better views, and more leg room.

23. The pirate William Kidd was born this month in 1645. Have you read Treasure Island?

No. Seen it performed a lot on screen, but never felt the need to read it.

We've passed the third week of January. This includes more of the dropoff days: January 17, January 19, and the third Friday.

It's good for people to make their own plans, with help if wanted or needed. Variations of "How is that working for you?" are used to gauge progress. Here's an example from Brief Action Planning with a flow chart. This concept applies to most problem-solving situations, and it's something that anyone can learn to use.

The above approach is a shorthand version of the engineer problem-solving method. It requires following several steps such as defining a problem, brainstorming solutions, testing a solution, evaluating results, and making changes if necessary.

I fell over today and grazed my knee, which is really annoying. Nothing dangerous, but it hurts. For that reason, I didn't travel a long way from home on my walks. Here's a picture of some resurfacing works going on in a side road in light rain. My goodness, this is thrilling, isn't it? :P

To Heal With Trust

"Slow and easy, yes, just like that. I have your head, just let your body float," Dinah said, confident and reassuring all in one.

Roy closed his eyes, his body already feeling less sore as he followed her instructions. When she'd shown up, thrown Ollie out, and told him to stay clear, Roy hadn't known what to expect. Now, living with her, Lian occupied by Oracle and Dinah's teammates, he knew he was in the best possible hands to recover.

The hot tub was set just warm enough to pull his muscles loose, salt-tanged for buoyancy, and she had him. She'd never let him fall under, while his body just floated, easing the stress of his physical therapy away. She pushed when they did it, but not so hard as to build injuries, and then… she always took care of him after.

He wasn't going to fail her, or his baby girl, by wallowing in the fear of the near-fatal shots. He would trust her, as he always had, letting her guide him. When he went back out there, he'd be as strong as he'd ever been.

It was just like when she put him back together from the drugs.

Today is partly sunny and cold.  Heavy snow and deep cold are predicted for the weekend. :/

I fed the birds.  I've seen a small flock of sparrows and a male cardinal.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/23/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a large flock of sparrows and a female downy woodpecker.

Today I wanted to stay home from work, so I did. To celebrate myself, I made my favorite vegetarian tortilla soup and ate it with Wisconsin Organic Fontina that I got at HEB (before people panicking over the weather cleared the shelves).

It’s pretty good. It is extremely smooth and mild when you first bite into it, but then you find that it’s a bit crumbly and has a slightly sharp flavor. I actually really liked it. I had it with Hatch green chili pita chips and spicy pumpkin tortilla soup and it was a good combo.

I would very much like to attend a local rally in solidarity with Minnesota today - there are events planned nationwide - but it's currently -24C, which is -11F, and it feels like -32C, which is -26F. The wind is making my wind chimes do the intermittent mambo. Schools have closed all over the area, because it's not safe for kids to wait for buses in this. BRRRR! And not only BRRRR! It would be unsafe, in a very real way, for me to be outside for any length of time, even if I layered up.

... Do I head for a rally anyway, despite the horrible weather, or not? A large chunk of me is willing to risk it. I mean, the ICEDamns* aren't taking time off from intimidating and brutalizing people, are they?

*That's an admittedly clumsy play on ice dams i.e. what accumulate on a roof if there's heat escaping a house through the attic or similar, but I couldn't come up with anything better on short notice.

Challenge #12: Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life.

If you've ever stopped by to talk to me about rarepairs or favorite characters or niche AUs, here or on Discord or Tumblr or in the AO3 comments, thank you! You're the reason I've written as much as I have. (I'd still write for those rarepairs/rare characters/AUs, but knowing I'm writing for someone makes it that much more fun.)

If you followed me over here to Dreamwidth because I would not stop talking about it everywhere else, welcome :D I'm really glad you're here and gave it a shot. And if you've been on Dreamwidth way longer than I have, thank you for being here! It's my favorite place on the internet, and I'm enjoying it so much.

And if you write fic, or meta, or make art or moodboards or memes or anything else fandom-adjacent, you're the reason I got into fandom in the first place, so thank you! I've had a great time here and I'm looking forward to sticking around for a long time. I hope you do too. <3

I've been wanting to find a film that had a significant element that was about the Indian Ocean slave trade in some way. You know, the way any number of films talk about the Atlantic one. And I've barely been able to find anything. Considering the Indian Ocean trade trafficked about the same number of people as the Atlantic one (12 million, albeit over a longer period) this is an extraordinary and deeply frustrating omission.

In fairly extensive searching, I've turned up one film (in Malayalam), a couple of TV series and a few documentaries. That's it. I wouldn't expect a $150 million blockbuster, but a smaller-scale human drama could be made much more cheaply. It's pretty depressing that Hollywood appears to think slavery means the Romans and then the Atlantic slavers and pretty much nothing else. :/

my 2026 planner

Hi! I'm new to this community, here from a [personal profile] sixbeforelunch post. I've been using planners on and off for many years now, the main difference year to year being whether I found a planner I could afford and liked enough, because I'm shallow as hell. Having an actual planner works much better for me than setting up weekly spreads; I still get the Monday ritual of decorating the week's pages, but I don't have to fuck around with a ruler (for the most part).

Last year I found and began using a weekly spread planner from Kokonote, and got really into stickers.

many pictures under the cut )

This year I swapped to a page-a-day model, and I'm still learning what does and doesn't work for me in terms of decoration. Each page has a checklist on the side and a portion that's dotted. This is what I've done so far:

many pictures under the cut )

EDIT to say two things: most of my stickers are from TEDi, who have a veritable fucking mess of a corner that I often just crouch and make my way through trying to drop as few things as possible off their hooks; and I am also on Finch, if anyone else uses that? It's been a really nice companion to the planner this year. My friend code is LWQMXDV9J56. I think you get a ghostie micropet if you sign up and tell them I sent you, and I get app currency or something I think.

Challenge #11: In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5.

I've been granting wishes since Challenge #5, but unfortunately I did not closely track any of them! So you're just going to have to take my word for it that I did this one. ;)

But I will throw an invite out here, since I now have a working computer and can type AO3 comments without extended frustration and probably missed a few "please comment" wishes: if you have a specific fic you'd really like a comment on, drop it here and I'll check it out! Obviously I have my favorite fandoms, but I'll read canon-blind or original work.
